STAESA’s medical programme connects both long and short term motivated healthcare volunteers with government hospitals, mission hospitals, and private hospitals, clinics and HIV/AIDS homes to bring health care to the door steps of urban and rural communities.

Our medical programme provides volunteers an opportunity to work in hospitals and clinics with the medical officer in charge. The programme includes helping in the consulting rooms, laboratory, pharmacy and in the surgical theatre. In specific countries, the programme also integrates the HIV/AIDS project to help in the education of the population so as to eradicate the deadly disease or to minimise the spread, and to put an end to the illiteracy, stigma, and discrimination surrounding it.

Our volunteer team comprises non-medical volunteers, nurses, doctors and other health care providers who work side by side with local medical professionals.

Activities in the hospital include the following:

  • Shadowing the professionals in charge at the hospital
  • Working in a wide scope of settings and duties ranging from helping in both In Patients and Out Patients departments.
  • Helping in other general work in the laboratory and pharmacy
  • Observing and helping in the maternity ward
  • HIV/AIDS public education programme and HIV/AIDS programme in the hospital – counselling and testing
  • Working as part of a holistic team to prevent re-hospitalisation of chronically non-compliant mentally ill clients
  • Patient care (basic and therapeutic care), psychosocial care
  • Comprehensive Psychosocial Assessments, treatment plans and individual therapy

If you don’t have any knowledge of health activities and you are still interested in volunteering at the hospital, we still encourage you to apply. We're not only looking for those qualified to perform medical tests, but those who are willing to help in any way and receive hands-on experience.

If you are in a medical school and you need this programme for your academic credit, then we might be able to organise a local internship for you. Please contact us for more information.
