Wildlife Conservation

STAESA's Wildlife Conservation and Tourism Programme really is one of the gems of our schedule.  This programme allows volunteers to have direct contact with wildlife in Rustenburg Game Reserve.

This programme, running since 2009, has three primary sections for each volunteer: the park programme, the lodge programme and the game drive programme. Participants will work with locally trained volunteers on wildlife management, conservation, and wildlife based tourism, while being provided a great opportunity to meet other tourists and volunteers from all across the globe.

Activities in the park include work related to game, bottle feeding baby animals, repairing and cleaning cages, driving to other farms to pick up food for the lions and administration work. Examples of animals in the park are lions, leopards, cheetahs, tigers, small cats and cubs.

Activities at the lodge include working in the kitchen, cleaning the lodge and helping visitors around. Some fence fixing or short errands might also be required from time to time.

Activities regarding the game drive include helping the rangers to take the tourists round the wild to spot the animals.

In addition to spotting the big five, the South African conservation programme provides a great opportunity for cultural immersion, as it allows the participants to plunge themselves into the unique world of the people of South Africa. The programme is well designed to make sure you are always working with well experience game manager.

The project location is very safe with the communities very welcoming and the people very lovely to work with. STAESA’s Wildlife programme is run outside Johannesburg. Weekends are always free for the volunteers to travel for sightseeing.

Note, volunteers on the Wildlife Conservation programme are required to stay a minimum of four weeks. The first five days are for a sight seeing safari to acclimate you to the area.  Accommodation is on site.
